For brides, choosing a lipstick to tie your wedding make-up look together is one of the most exciting parts of the beauty planning. Will you choose a classic pink or brown nude to suit your skin tone, or make a statement with a vibrant red or vampy berry? Shade and pigment wise, there are so many options out there.

As with any make-up, it’s recommended to do a pre-wedding wear test so that you can see how it looks after one, two and even ten hours after first applying. You may love the look when it goes on, but not so much when it’s worn in. A top tip to make your lipstick last all day: line the lips with a lip liner in a similar, if not identical, shade to your lipstick. Powder over the liner with a translucent setting powder (Laura Mercier is a staple), before you apply your lipstick. If you’re going matte, you can even powder in between layers to ensure it stays put. On the quest for the best lipstick to wear on your wedding day, begin with these editor-approved formulas.

Best For: A Pinky Nude That Suits Everyone

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lipstick, £28 charlottetilbury.com

A beloved pinky nude for all occasions, Charlotte Tilbury’s iconic Pillow Talk Lipstick is the perfect, creamy texture for brides to wear on their wedding day.  The best part is that no matter which shade of pink suits you best, Pillow Talk comes in a variety of hues: original, fair, medium and intense. The formula of Pillow Talk Original and Pillow Talk Medium is best described as a creamy matte, so while it won’t give you high shine, it gives a beautiful soft sheen and highly-pigmented finish. Pillow Talk Fair and Pillow Talk Intense come in Charlotte’s K.I.S.S.I.N.G formula, for more of a balmy, glossy finish. Head into a Charlotte Tilbury store or counter to be shade-matched for your perfect pout.

Best For: A Highly-Pigmented Lipstick

Tom Ford Lip Colour, £49 tomfordbeauty.co.uk

When asked to recommend a red lip, Tom Ford is always my first port of call for its staying power and pack-a-punch pigment. But the same rules apply for all 18 lip shades in the range. For brides opting for a bold red, Cherry Lush is the ultimate true-red (with blue undertones that suit neutral and pink undertones – which you are if the veins in your wrist are blue), and Wild Ginger is a great choice for olive and yellow undertones with its orange-red hue.

Best For: Nourishing And Hydrating

Victoria Beckham Posh Lipstick, £37 victoriabeckhambeauty.com

A balm-like texture in Victoria Beckham’s lipstick makes it a great choice for brides to wear on their wedding day – it’s comfortable, hydrating and lightweight, thanks to rosehip, coconut and avocado oils. Pair that with a rich pigment payoff and the result is a gorgeous satin-like sheen. Whether you go pink with Pout, vampy with Play or vibrant with Pop, Victoria Beckham’s lipstick is an ultra chic choice.

Best For: Maximum Shine

Hermès, Rouge Hermès Satin Lipstick, £62 www.hermes.com

This is one orange box you don’t need to score an appointment for. Rogue Hermès comprises 24 carefully curated lipsticks, in both matte and satin formulas. The satin formula is a sure-fire winner for soft, diffused colour that strikes the perfect balance between velvet softness and shine, and one that will work with any kind of make-up vibe. Orange Boîte is the brand’s signature colour, inspired by its iconic orange box, which would make for a fun, unusual twist on a classic bridal lip.

Best For: A Subtle, Glossy Look

Rhode Peptide Lip Tint, £18, www.rhodeskin.com

Hailey Beiber’s brand Rhode has taken the industry by storm since it launched in 2022 (and, according to one wedding make-up artist, Beiber’s make-up style is the most requested for brides on their wedding day). Its first lip product, the Peptide Lip Treatment was so popular when it launched, it built a total waitlist of 440,000. While Peptide Lip Treatments is a lip balm by nature, the pigmented Peptide Lip Tints make for a gorgeous soft, glowing lip look for a bride. Perfect for brides with more of a pared-back make-up look, or want to up the gloss-factor of your favourite lipstick.

Best For: A Lipstick That Lasts

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink, £9.99, boots.com

If lipstick lasting all day and night is a top criteria, Maybelline’s Super Stay Matte Ink does what it says on the tin. A liquid lipstick in formula, it glides on with ultra-intense pigment, and is available in a huge variety of shades. The petal-shaped doe foot makes for easy application to define your Cupid’s bow, and even one coat will provide full-on colour and a matte finish, which promises 12-hour wear. This is a lipstick to lock in colour from ‘I do’ to dance floor.

Best For: A Lipstick Keepsake

Carolina Herrera Lipstick, from £27 For Lipstick Refill carolinaherrera.com

Carolina Herrera’s lipsticks and charms are such a fun way to accessorise your beauty stash, as well as being wedding-worthy formulas. They make great gifts for bridesmaids, too. Choose your satin or matte formula (the blur matte is my top tip for the best staying power, and can always be topped with a gloss for a boost of shine) and customisable cap and charms. How about yours and your new spouse’s initials?

Best For: A Bespoke Lipstick

Code8 Make Your Own Lipstick, £80 codeeight.com

Dreaming of a particular shade but can’t find The One? Code 8’s Lipstick Bar based in Burlington Arcade, Mayfair in London, allows brides to make a shade completely bespoke to them over a 45-minute session. It starts with picking the base undertone, mixing and testing, creating a mold and then voila! A lipstick shade completely unique to you. Could this lipstick be your Something New?

The Best Foundations For Brides

Chantecaille Future Skin Cushion Foundation, £132.00

For brides craving a luminous glow and flawless complexion, Chantecaille Future Skin Cushion Foundation is a must-have. Its buildable coverage and long-lasting formula ensure a picture-perfect finish, ideal for capturing radiant beauty on your wedding day. This innovative cushion foundation seamlessly enhances your natural allure, making it a firm favourite among editors for its effortless elegance and timeless appeal.

SHADE AND ILLUMINATE SOFT RADIANCE FOUNDATION SPF 50, £112

This silky-smooth Tom Ford hero product is regularly spotted inside London’s top make-up artist’s kits for a weightless yet tenacious formula that leaves behind an enviable glow that never clings to dry areas and leaves your complexion looking plump and smooth. Also known for impressive coverage that looks great in pictures, it has a very inclusive shade range.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup, £35, harrods.com

An icon, and an icon for a reason, Esteé Lauder’s high coverage foundation launched in 1997 but it remains a favourite of wedding make-up artists, brides and mothers of the bride alike. It’s so good that it’s surprising it doesn’t come with a guarantee – this is one formula that looks just as good straight after application as it does after ten hours (dance floor included). Not sure which is your perfect shade? Head to counter where clever technology can shade match you on the spot.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation, £29, maccosmetics.co.uk

MAC’s studio range is formulated for being in front of the camera, whether that be under hot lights in a photography studio or out on location on a film set, and seeing as you’re going to be spending the entirety of your day getting snapped, it’s no wonder MAC’s high-coverage formula is a great choice for brides. It has a natural matte finish, so if it’s glow you’re after, you can amp up the ‘lit-from-within’ look with a liquid blush and/or highlighter on top.

Pixi H2O Skin Tint, £24, pixibeauty.co.uk

Smooth, fresh-faced, like you but just that little bit brighter – say hello to Pixi’s skin tint. The water-based gel tint formula is much lighter than a traditional foundation, and makes your skin feel cool and refreshed (beach brides – this is your ‘One’!). Plus, it’s water resistant, so won’t run if you happen to shed a tear or two

Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, £44.50, feelunique.com

This multi-award-winning foundation is famed for its instant glow-factor, but it’s also a great choice for those looking for light coverage. It’s a cult celebrity favourite, including Kim Kardashian West’s who loves it for nailing her signature ‘soft glow’ look. For sheer coverage, swirl it on to skin with a stippling brush and build up in the areas that you’d like it.

Charlotte Tilbury Charlotte’s Beautiful Skin Foundation £34, charlottetilbury.com

A recent addition to the foundation market, and one that’s already making waves for its medium, buildable coverage and all-over glow. If you’re conscious about using kind-to-skin make-up, this is a brilliant choice. Charlotte’s formula contains hyaluronic acid to hydrate, coconut extract to help your skin keep hydrated throughout the day, and a brightening rose complex that targets dullness and dryness. Glow, guaranteed.

Clé de Peau Beauté Radiant Cream Foundation, £108, harrods.com

While this may not be an option for brides on a budget, the quality of Clé de Peau Beaute’s foundation range is exceptional. It has a knack of offering good coverage while making skin still look like skin. It’ll conceal any unwanted redness but let freckles shine through and is a brilliant choice for brides getting married abroad, as it works seamlessly with your skin, whatever the climate.

Laura Mercier Silk Crème Oil-Free Foundation, £38, cultbeauty.co.uk

‘Oil-free’, unsurprisingly, is one of the key terms to look out for when you’re after a foundation that won’t leave you with a second skin sheen after three hours. This is an oil-free version of Laura Mercier’s bestselling foundation, and a winning choice for brides with oily skin. It’s high coverage but feels wonderfully lightweight, so you can apply once and then forget about it – just the ticket for a busy Big Day.

Bare Minerals Matte Mineral Loose Powder Foundation

Bare Minerals’ original icon, its loose powder foundation is a brilliant option for those with oily skin. It’s both non-comodogenic and non-acnegenic, meaning that it won’t clog pores to cause breakouts or blemishes (in fact, the brand claims the formula is so clean you could even sleep in it – though we wouldn’t recommend). Buff on with the complementary brush and build from light to full as required.

Bare Minerals Matte Mineral Loose Powder Foundation, bareminerals.co.uk

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Hydrating Longwear Foundation

Hydrating and longwear are two buzzwords you want to see if you’re a bride with skin on the dry side. Fenty Beauty’s ultra-smooth formula glides on effortlessly – just one pump goes a long way. What’s more, it’s sweat and humidity-proof (tick, tick) and with its 50 shades, you’re sure to find one you can’t wait to wear down the aisle.

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Hydrating Longwear Foundation, £30, boots.com

Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation

Bridal expert Bobbi Brown has a solution for dry skin woes with its innovative serum foundation. With lychee, bamboo grass and cordyceps mushrooms which reduce inflammation and gives skin a glowing boost. Just be sure to dust a layer of loose powder across the t-zone and you’ll be good to go all day.

Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation SPF 40, £51, bobbibrown.co.uk

Lancôme Custom Made Foundation

You’ve found one perfect match, but how about your foundation partner? Le Teint Particular allows you to find your exact shade – and choose your level of hydration, too. It’s only available in-store but it’s worth a visit to take out the guessing.

Lancôme Le Teint Particular Custom-Made Foundation, find it in-store in The Beauty Halls at Harrods.

A primer is vital to keep any makeup lasting all day and night. Discover the best, as chosen by experts.

A vital part of any bridal makeup arsenal, primers are like the glue between skincare and makeup, used for smoothing and blurring, and providing extra grip for foundation to stay in place all day and all night. And with a big event like a wedding, a primer is a must-have for brides. Here, we’ve rounded up editor-approved primers for all skin types and budgets, so you can find a primer for your wedding day as solid as your vows.

Best For: Oily Skin

Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Primer, £55 hourglasscosmetics.co.uk

Hourglass’ high quality, vegan formulas have earned cult status in recent years, not least the Vanish Airbrush collection, created with blurring technology to give skin that coveted ‘you look so healthy’ finish. Vanish Airbrush Primer is a gel primer in consistency, which helps it feel super lightweight when applied, and it’s particularly good for brides with oily to combination skin thanks to its oil control features.

Best For: A Glowing Primer

Vieve Skin Nova 30ml, £29 vievebeauty.com

Vieve fans love this primer so much that founder and makeup artist Jamie Genevieve had to bring one out 3x the size. It’s an instant glow in a bottle, featuring star skincare ingredients such as niacinamide and beta-glucan, for a soothing, hydrating primer that’s ideal for those with dry, normal or combination skin. Bonus: Vieve Skin Nova primer is also excellent for brides wearing a strapless dress for extra glow on collarbones and shoulders.

Best For: All-Round Staying Power

Tatcha The Liquid Silk Canvas, £51, spacenk.com

Tatcha is relatively new in the UK, and a celebrity favourite (Nicola Caughlan attributed her Bridgerton glow to Tatcha). The Liquid Silk Canvas features silk extracts to hydrate and reduce the appearance of pores and fine lines, along with pink and gold pearl for an extra natural-looking glow. It can be used across the face and eyes (and is fantastic on the eyes for boosting the pigment of eyeshadow), and is so lightweight in texture that it’s easy to doubt its staying power. However, its staying power is so good that in a consumer trial, 100% of people agreed that The Liquid Silk Canvas helped their makeup wear longer. If that’s not a qualifier for best primer for brides, we’re not sure what is.

Best For: A Dewy Skin Finish

Charlotte Tilbury WonderGlow, £40, charlottetilbury.com

Contributing editor and makeup artist Yasmin Salmon swears by the Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow Primer paired with the Nars Radiance Primer for her bridal clients. In Charlotte Tilbury’s Wonderglow, hyaluronic acid and rosehip oil pack in hydration and the light-reflecting pigments that give that instant glow showcase an airbrushed, blurred effect in person and on camera.

Best For: A Skincare-makeup Hybrid

Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base 50ml, £54, bobbibrown.co.uk

Vitamin Enriched Face Base is a moisturiser-primer hybrid that’s been in the bridal beauty hall of fame for years. It works for brides with all types of skin as it’s a water based formula, featuring shea butter and vitamins B, C and E and to smooth, soften and set makeup in place. Top tip: forgo moisturiser on the day if you’re using this primer. Less is more when it comes to layering product to ensure your skin is on top form.

Best For: A Budget Primer

E.L.F Power Grip Primer, £10, boots.com

E.L.F’s clear Power Grip is a more traditional primer, leaving a tacky finish to your skin after applying, so that makeup can literally stick to it. Don’t be put off by the stickiness as it disappears as soon as foundation is applied on top – but best to leave it for a minute or two to set. It’s one of the best on the high street for a primer that will ensure your makeup stays in place all day. For best results, apply with your fingers, as the warmth of your (or your makeup artist’s) hands will ensure the product melts seamlessly into your skin.

Best For: Great Japanese Skin Science

Shiseido Revitalessence Skin Glow Primer, £39 harrods.com

Shiseido is a go-to brand for brilliant makeup and skincare that’s got the backing of Japanese science. In particular, its water-based foundation formulas are some of the best of the market, providing great coverage while not feeling. This Shiseido primer is no different. More akin to a moisturiser than a traditional primer, the pinky lightweight cream contains prebiotics and niacinamide to boost your skin at this extra layer, too. It’s got no silicones too, so if silicone is a no-go for you, this product is a winner for all brides.

Best For: Glass Skin

Refy Glow and Sculpt Primer, £24 refybeauty.com

Coveting the glass skin trend? Refy’s hydrating primer is your best bet for dewy skin with a glass-like shine. It’s especially good if you’re going for a more pared-back makeup look, or perhaps getting married abroad where you’re after a no makeup, makeup look but need that staying power. For sculpting, this primer features a roller application, to help add definition to the contours of your face. Start at the centre of the face and sweep upwards and outwards as you apply.

The Wedding Edition hosted an exuberant riverside luncheon at Scott’s Richmond’s Al Fresco terrace, an old-world oasis from city life. On Wednesday, the 26th of June, the sunniest of days with the gentlest of breezes, we entered Estée Lauder’s world of technicolour.

The room was alive and buzzing in a sea of vibrant hues with the sunshine-filled River Thames in the background. Guests were immersed in the most beautiful of backdrops with a tablescape styled by Cleo Alexiou, who expertly matched the rose, cherry, and burgundy hues of Estée Lauder lipsticks to the colourful candles. There were bursts of bright patterned joy from the eternally elegant Addison Ross table details. Fiona Fleur’s bespoke florals immersed the space with a rich, vivid ambience, achieved through the delicate placement of small bud vases, adding a final touch of understated charm.

Guests old and new dressed in vibrant hues; Aimée Kelly, Fran Newman-Young, Flavia Blenko, Aarti Pal, Tanjia Sayed, Yasmine Naghdi, Tabitha Willett, Phoebe Torrance, Ambar Miraaj Driscoll and more.

A masterclass in blending the colour of a jet-set travel wardrobe with your Estée Lauder lipstick was hosted by star presenter and undisputed queen of colour, Zeena Shah. Our resident expert advised our guests on how to adopt a ‘dopamine dressing’ approach to your makeup bag, finding your colour confidence by applying a swoosh of bright lipstick to lift the mood and zhoosh up a simple outfit in seconds. Zeena masterfully demonstrated to our guests how to find their colour season and use the colour wheel for maximum impact.

The menu boasted all of the colour and vibrancy that comes with true seasonality. It was an abundance of riches: First, a summer vegetable salad with whipped Golden Cross goat’s cheese and tempura courgette flower, followed by a light main of Cornish chicken breast with confit wing, and best-of-season strawberry pavlova for dessert. Paired beautifully with Magnums of Lady A Rose and Silent Pool cocktails, the highlight being the After Hours: Silent Pool Rose Expression Gin, Tawny Port, Orange Bitters, Orange & Raspberry Soda, giving a special nod to the hottest lipstick shade of the season.

As carriages were drawn, guests received parting gifts that ensured they will have a joyful summer of technicolour, from stunning shell bags from Fable England and chic travel accessories from Aspinal of London.

It was a day of vibrant colours, delightful flavours, and unforgettable memories, perfectly embodying the spirit of Estée Lauder.

“At Jo Hansford Salons, we create bespoke colours tailored to each bride,” explains Joanna. “We consider growth patterns and how your hair will be styled on the wedding day. Our focus is on maintaining health and shine, ensuring your hair looks fabulous for the wedding, pre-wedding events, honeymoon, and beyond.”

Maintaining Vibrant Hair Colour Before the Wedding

“To keep your hair colour vibrant, regular treatments and professional home care are essential,” says Joanna. “Our Jo Hansford Expert Colour Care range, which is sulphate and paraben-free, is designed to protect and nurture coloured hair. The masque (£29) is particularly popular with brides for creating luscious locks without weighing the hair down. Also, wash your hair the day or night before the wedding to ensure it holds the style better.”

Personalising for Every Bride

“Every bride is unique, and so are our services,” Joanna emphasises. “During consultations, we consider every detail of your wedding, from the dress and venue to how you usually wear your hair. We advise against drastic changes close to the wedding to ensure you feel like yourself on your big day. If you want a significant change, do it well in advance to allow time for adjustments.”

Make your Bridal Hair Transformations Memorable

“We’ve had some memorable transformations,” recalls Joanna. “One bride flew back from Greece after her extensions turned pink due to chlorine and suntan cream reactions. We corrected the colour just in time for her wedding. Another memorable client was Melanie Griffiths, who came to us for a colour tweak and blow-dry before her secret wedding to Antonio Banderas. We only realised we were styling her for her wedding when we saw the photos later.”

Booking Your Appointment

Blow-dries at Jo Hansford Salons start from £75, a cut and blow from £165, and colour appointments from £140. To book an appointment, contact:

We chat to Elena Lavagni, the uber-fabulous owner of the world-famous Nevilles Hair & Beauty. Nestled in the heart of Belgravia, Nevilles Hair & Beauty stands as a pinnacle of stylish hair and sophistication, celebrated for transforming hair into exquisite masterpieces. With a legacy steeped in excellence and a flair for innovation, Elena and her team have earned an illustrious reputation within the beauty industry. Today, Elena shares her expert advice on achieving the perfect wedding hair, ensuring you look and feel your absolute best on your special day.

Plan Ahead

Can you explain why it’s essential to start planning your wedding hair well in advance?

Planning ahead allows time for any necessary hair treatments, growing out, or cuts that may be required to achieve your desired look. It also ensures you have ample time to try different styles and make adjustments based on what you like and what works best with your hair type.

What timeline do you recommend for brides to begin their hair preparations?

Brides should begin planning their wedding hair at least 6-12 months before the wedding. This timeline provides enough time for consultations, trials, and any hair care routines that need to be implemented.

Consultation is Key

How important is the initial consultation with your stylist?

The initial consultation is crucial as it allows the stylist to understand your vision, discuss any hair concerns, and plan the best approach to achieve the desired look. It’s also an opportunity to build rapport and ensure you feel comfortable with your stylist.

What should brides bring or consider during this first meeting?

Brides should bring inspiration photos, pictures of their wedding dress, and any hair accessories they plan to use. It’s also helpful to discuss any hair history, including treatments and products currently being used, and most importantly, bring photos of styles they don’t like.

Trial Runs

Why are trial runs crucial for achieving the perfect wedding hairstyle?

Trial runs allow brides to see how their desired style looks on them and make any necessary adjustments. It also provides an opportunity to test the durability of the hairstyle and ensure it will last throughout the wedding day. It’s also crucial to consider if the wedding will be indoors, outdoors, or by the sea.

How many trial sessions do you recommend, and what should brides expect during these trials?

At least two trial sessions are recommended. During these trials, brides can expect to try different styles, test how well the hairstyle holds up, and discuss any adjustments needed to perfect the look.

Hair Care Routine

Can you share some essential hair care tips leading up to the wedding day?

Essential tips include regular deep conditioning treatments, minimising heat styling, and maintaining a healthy diet. Regular trims to keep hair ends healthy and avoiding new hair treatments close to the wedding day are also important. This is also the best time to organise the correct hair colour for the wedding day.

Are there specific treatments or products you recommend for maintaining healthy hair?

Treatments like keratin treatments, regular deep conditioning, and using professional hair care products tailored to your hair type are recommended. Additionally, using heat protectants when styling and avoiding harsh chemicals can help maintain healthy hair.

Choosing the Right Style

What factors should brides consider when selecting their wedding hairstyle?

Brides should consider their dress style, wedding theme, hair texture, and personal comfort. It’s important that the hairstyle complements the dress and overall wedding aesthetic while being practical for the day’s events and comfortable for the bride. The bride should recognise herself and feel confident and at ease.

How do you help brides decide on a style that complements their dress and overall theme?

I discuss the wedding theme, look at the dress, and consider the bride’s personal style and hair type. Together, we select styles that enhance the overall look and ensure the bride feels confident, comfortable, and beautiful.

Accessorise Wisely

How can accessories enhance a wedding hairstyle?

Accessories can add a touch of elegance and personalise the hairstyle, but it’s important not to overdo it.

Do you have any tips for choosing the right hair accessories?

Choose accessories that complement your dress and overall style. Ensure they are secure and comfortable, and consider having a few options to try during your hair trials to see what looks best. Currently, the best accessory can often be no accessory, offering a fresher, more natural look.

Day-Of Preparations

What steps should brides take on the wedding day to ensure their hair looks flawless?

Brides should follow their pre-established hair care routine leading up to the wedding day, avoid washing their hair on the day for better styling hold, sleep on a silk pillowcase, and ensure they have all necessary products and accessories ready.

Can you share any last-minute tips or tricks to keep the hairstyle intact throughout the celebration?

Regardless of the style, it’s invaluable to have your hairdresser with you throughout the day to ensure your hair remains perfect.
