‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven; and heaven was copied after Mauritius’, according to Mark Twain, and we couldn’t agree more. For honeymooners, this magical Indian Ocean island is a divine destination year-round with its pleasant subtropical climate, lush landscape and elegant hotels – not to mention the 330 kilometres of sandy beaches that lace the island’s fringes.

And here’s another tip: if you’re after proper insider knowledge and expertise, family-owned and run Turquoise Holidays is the travel firm to turn to. They’ve created dreamy escapes for 10,000 honeymooners and each and every detail— from hotel ambience to spa and sports experiences, to sourcing a villa with an infinity pool and butler service— is taken care of, leaving you and your partner to lie back, relax and start your life as newlyweds in this island paradise.

The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius

After the whirlwind of wedding week, you can slip away to the sophisticated Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritus for real privacy amidst the 20-acre estate of lush gardens and bespoke architecture, and dive into phenomenal themed dining experiences. Think romantic fine-dining in the original 18th-century Gunpowder Room, all rustic walls and antique wine barrels, and on Saturday and Sunday, relaxed, communal al fresco cuisine in the fragrant herb garden— complete with underground fire pit.

Foodies can also get hands-on with complimentary Mauritian cooking classes. Home to just 71 villas and pavilions— go for one with a private pool for extra serenity— the eco-sensitive design here includes indigenous materials such as coconut wood and sugar cane thatch. Oh, and 600 metres of beachfront with mountain views comes as standard.

Exclusive Offer: 30% discount is valid for travel until 31 October 2025. Stay 7 nights at The Oberoi Mauritius in a Luxury Garden View Pavilion, bed & breakfast from £2,199 per person travelling in November. Includes return private transfers and international flights. *** Plus, honeymooners will receive a three-course candlelit dinner for two people along with a honeymoon turndown on the second night of their stay including one bottle of wine.

One&Only Le Saint Géran

Say bonsoir to One&Only Le Saint Géran, grande dame of Mauritius! And, each of the 143 rooms and suites is blessed with a private terrace or balcony facing the ocean, lagoon or white-sand beach for serene views. Getting-away-from-it-all couples can float in one of the two peaceful pools and drift to the swim up bar when refreshment calls. Meanwhile, active sorts can enjoy three floodlit tennis courts with a tennis Pro and 2 Padel courts— a first for Mauritius. We’re betting you start love-all and end up with a perfect match.

You can continue your dreamy sojourn at Le Barachois, an overwater floating restaurant with five decks where you’ll partake in world-class cuisine— think heaped platters of fruits de mer and freshly grilled seafood. A private gourmet dinner at twilight on the gorgeous beach or in your serene suite is another tempting possibility. The only trouble is, you may never want to go home.

Even after a decade as a Jewellery Editor, there are still some diamonds that stop me in my tracks. Like the eight-carat old European cut solitaire that I tried on at Hancocks London: a megastar of a stone, fully deserving of the tiny rotating plinth on which it’s displayed. And it’s not the only diamond to cause a sharp intake of breath.

Burlington Gallery High Res

The Burlington Gallery on the second floor of Hancocks’ newly renovated St James’s showroom showcases dozens of incredible diamonds, from classical solitaires to unusual cuts and colours. With its pink Setting Plaster walls, Murano glass chandeliers and a Bollinger champagne bar secreted inside a cupboard, it’s a romantic haven for the newly or almost-engaged. With such a dazzling range of rings to try on, you’ll want to linger for hours.

A four-carat Art Deco emerald-cut diamond, a two-carat Golconda diamond, elegant oval diamonds in flower-inspired designs, plus Colombian emeralds, Burmese rubies, sapphires in stunning shades of pink and blue… it’s a magpie’s dream, and every ring is one-of-a-kind. That’s because the vast majority of Hancocks’ diamonds and gemstones are antique: many are sourced from historic jewellery, and given a new lease of life in handcrafted rings inspired by the era in which the stone was originally cut.

“When these diamonds were originally cut, they did not have the commercial pressures of today; the goal was to create the most beautiful, polished gem possible, maintaining weight while making something with character, beauty, life and charm,” says Guy Burton, Managing Director of Hancocks London, which was founded in Mayfair in 1849. “Our old-cut diamonds are all individuals and still show the hand and skill of the cutter. Each one is truly unique in character.”

This celebration of history is what makes Hancocks unique. One of London’s oldest and most prestigious jewellers, it has received four royal warrants over its 175-year history – the first from Queen Victoria in 1849. Visitors to the new showroom can flick through a company diary started by its founder, Charles Hancock, in 1866. The diary documents the house’s numerous royal, aristocratic and celebrity clients, while the contents of the display cabinets reflect centuries of exceptional craftsmanship.

Previously located in a shop in Burlington Arcade, Hancocks’ new home displays an astonishing amount of antique, vintage and newly crafted jewellery over three sumptuous showrooms. On the ground floor, vintage Cartier, Bulgari and Van Cleef & Arpels appear alongside centuries-old tiaras. I popped a late-Victorian pearl and diamond tiara on my head and instantly felt like a Disney Princess. It’s the perfect finishing touch to a dreamy bridal look. Upstairs, in the Bruton Gallery, I strung a 1930s rivière necklace around my neck: set with over 40 carats of old-cut diamonds, it would be show-stopping for a black-tie wedding, and still looks modern enough to wear with jeans or tailoring.

There’s a gorgeous array of wedding-day jewellery scattered throughout the three floors: from natural pearl earrings and necklaces to antique diamond bracelets, diamond chandeliers and, my favourite, a cabinet full of bold, textured gold jewellery that would look sensational with a minimal silk gown.

Vintage jewellery connoisseurs will get excited about collectible jewellery by the likes of Georges Lenfant, Rene Boivin and Aldo Cipullo. And those whose love affair with vintage is just beginning can be reassured that the collection has been curated by Hancocks’ experts, with a focus on distinctive design and exceptional hand-craftsmanship.

“We pride ourselves on our curation of jewellery, that displays the finest skills and expertise of designers and master craftsmen,” says Guy, who selects every antique diamond and gemstone himself, and leads the development of bespoke creations. As a family-run house, this personal touch is what keeps clients coming back, knowing that every time they walk through Hancocks’ doors, there will be a new selection of one-of-a-kind treasure to explore.

Navigating what to wear as the mother-of-the-bride is something of a minefield. Throw in a black tie dress code and a December wedding date and you can rip up the traditional “rulebook” entirely.

While my own mum, Jo, was thrilled that she wasn’t expected to wear a frou-frou fascinator and matching floral dress, this elation soon turned to a headache when she began shopping. Where does one go for mother-of-the-bride dresses that are appropriate for the season, dress code and, importantly, won’t be worn by another guest?

The solution? Go bespoke, something Gill Harvey at Eliza Jane Howell has down to a tee.

Where Did It All Begin?

12 years ago, Gill Harvey and Andrea Cutts established the bridal brand, Eliza Jane Howell, and this was closely followed by the inception of Gill Harvey Collection. The latter was born out of the duo’s desire to redefine occasion wear for the modern day woman and mother-of-the-bride, all whilst retaining a sense of history with ancient beading techniques and vintage silhouettes.

Today, Gill’s legacy and vision is continued by her protegé, designer Catherine Fisher, Andrea and the team at Eliza Jane Howell in London’s Connaught Village

A Snapshot Of The Boutique & Experience

As boutiques go, the Eliza Jane Howell flagship on Connaught Street needs to be seen to be believed. Filled with sequins, beads and feathers at every turn, it is a kaleidoscopic feast for the eyes and offers both bespoke, made-to-measure gowns and ready-to-wear designs off the peg.

With my personal experience of finding a wedding dress fairly straightforward, before we arrived at Eliza Jane Howell, my mum was a little nervous and feeling the pressure. Fortunately, our appointment with Andrea was a riot of fun, and she put Mum at ease immediately.

The intimate nature of a one-to-one appointment with Andrea at Eliza Jane Howell extends to the fitting room too which feels boudoir-like with its sweeping velvet curtain, perfect for a grand reveal, and antique furniture.

Size-inclusive, Eliza Jane Howell also stocks sizes 8 to 26 . No matter your shape nor size, Andrea has a special knack for making a woman feel a million dollars and can tailor every detail and design to your desire should you wish you to marry the pattern of one dress with the colourway of another, for example.

A Gill Harvey Collection appointment at Eliza Jane Howell is, pleasingly, free of charge and there is no limit to the number of mother-of-the-bride dresses you can try on— so arrive caffeinated and ready to celebrate afterwards with a glass of champagne in Connaught Village.

The Try-On

Keeping in mind the location and season of our wedding, my Mum looked past the glorious summer shades on offer and we shortlisted a number of Gill Harvey Collection mother of the bride dresses in blue, green and gold with Andrea’s guidance.

With bright blue eyes, my Mum was positively glowing in the teal blue colourway that was reminiscent of a peacock’s plumage, but it was the flattering scallop neckline of the midnight blue dress that she fell in love with.

The real showstopper, however, was the Lady Carlotta: a floor-length, dazzling gold dress with beaded, cap sleeves. I, for one, loved it, but Mum was nervous it might err on the side of stealing the spotlight— a delicate balance. Of course, given that all designs are made-to-order, Andrea suggested that the pattern could be made in the midnight blue colourway my mum loved, to create a truly one-of-a-kind design.

Similarly, while many of the designs in the Gill Harvey Collection were knee or ankle length, Andrea assured us that any dress could be made floor-length for the purpose of our black-tie wedding, which opened up a world of possibilities.

The Verdict

During our appointment at Eliza Jane Howell, Andrea called in the boutique’s seamstress who was able to swiftly take Mum’s measurements and noted the bespoke modifications she’d like to make to the colour and length.

Three to four months is the sweet spot when it comes to placing an order and so, with four months to go until my own big day, you’ll have to watch this space for a glimpse at the final mother-of-the-bride design…

The Extras

At Eliza Jane Howell, there is also a spectacular range of capes, hair accessories and vintage jewellery making it the perfect destination for self-confessed magpie mothers and brides-to-be.

If your wedding daydream involves holding hands on a beach under balmy skies, a destination wedding in Thailand (and blissful honeymoon afterwards) could make it come true. Known as the ‘Land of Smiles’ for its warm hospitality, this stunning country of ornate temples and tropical shores is the ideal location for a romantic ceremony.

How to Organise a Chic Wedding in Thailand

Done right, a wedding in Thailand is the epitome of affordable luxury and a fabulous upgrade to your big day. Simply pick your favourite backdrop – lotus lake, beachscape, shimmering waterfall or majestic mountain – and your magical wedding journey has begun.

The legal technicalities are simple to sort too, you just complete the paperwork and register it at the district office, known as the ‘amphur’ (‘or ‘khet’ in Bangkok). A stay in Bangkok is usually required, and to make things super smooth, we’d also recommend a wedding planner or capable hotel to make the arrangements. The sleek Hyatt Regency can assist, and the city’s expert wedding planners include The Botanical House.

With the promise of sunshine, lush landscapes and fragrant cuisine, family and friends will be delighted to RSVP – we have it on good authority that every wedding guest longs to don a floaty gown and snap glowing selfies, all tousled beach hair, tropical cocktail in hand. And what better place for your happy-ever-after than the Land of Smiles?

Classic Choices for a Thailand Honeymoon

The romance continues with a classic honeymoon in Thailand. Bangkok is a buzzing cultural centre, and, alongside the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, fabulous galleries abound – one of the coolest is street-art hub Aurum, founded by drum and bass legend Goldie. Spend your evenings in Bangkok’s stylish rooftop restaurants and bars (the highest is Sky Beach), and stay in the historic Old City Area, or for foodies, Chinatown.

Chiang Mai is voted among the world’s best cities to visit, and its relaxed pace is ideal for honeymooners. Wander around the old city with its beautiful temples, then, come evening, head for a live music venue serving street food – North Gate Jazz Co-Op is a winner – with cocktails at speakeasy White Rabbit to finish.

After a beach break? The tropical triple-whammy of Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao islands makes it easy. Touchdown in Koh Samui and frequent boat services deliver you to the other islands whenever you fancy. You’ll find quiet coasts where you can completely relax, alongside Koh Pha Ngan’s famed monthly Full Moon Party for boogie nights.

An Island-Hopping Thailand Honeymoon

If your honeymoon hotlist involves island-hopping, you’re spoiled for choice in Thailand. Krabi province has a sprinkling of gorgeous islands to visit, including the six Phi Phi Islands, set in an area of outstanding natural beauty – all azure waves, sandy beaches and dramatic limestone cliffs, plus superb diving. Laidback Ko Lanta is also just a couple of hours by ferry from Krabi. Perfect beaches aside, the Old Town is also worth visiting for its divine seafood restaurants and quaint wooden houses.

Meanwhile, tiny Ko Lipe offers incredible snorkelling amid pristine coral reefs. With its relaxed beachfront hotels, it makes a great honeymoon base for exploring stunning nearby islands. Fancy being pampered? Ko Kood is laidback luxe – a stay at eco resort Soneva Kiri and a Six Senses Spa session should have you floating on air – and is so worth the seven-hour trip from Bangkok!

An exhilarating 30-minute speedboat ride from Phuket, Ko Yao Noi and twin island Ko Yao Yai are tranquil thanks to traffic-free roads. Simply hop on a bike or kayak to hidden beaches for pure peace.

Adventurous Honeymoons in Thailand

Thailand honeymooners with a taste for adventure have an entire buffet of activities to choose from. Chiang Mai has an excellent trekking scene – think lush jungle pathways and stunning waterfalls. It’s also the perfect starting point to reach Mae Hong Son (via a magical journey over winding mountain roads). Halfway between these two lies the bohemian town of Pai where you’ll discover a night market with tasty street food, hot springs and the Pai Canyon.

A couple of hours by train from Bangkok is Kanchanaburi. Home to Sai Yok National Park, it offers trails, caves and waterfalls – alongside floating accommodation, like River Kwai Jungle Rafts Resort – a bamboo eco lodge where romantic evenings are lit by the glow of traditional kerosene lamps.

For Bangkok adventures, clamber up the 300-plus steps of the Golden Mount for incredible panoramic views then visit a vibrant floating market – just barter for your boat and paddle along. Cycling fans can tour the Bangkok Jungle area of the city. After all that, a suite at The Siam with oversized, cloud-soft beds and Italian bathtubs spacious enough for two brings the honeymoon luxury (as does the attentive butler service).

After spending far too much time comparing quotes from bus companies to ferry our guests from the church to our reception venue, it was time for a spot of fun wedding admin to put a pep in my step. Compiling my dream wedding gift registry reminded me of the excitement of writing my Christmas list for Santa Claus when I was little — except I’d like to think my taste is a little more refined now.

Enter The Wedding Present Company, a drop-dead gorgeous sanctuary of elegant homewares, expertly curated delights, and proper indulgences, designed to feast your eyes on — and populate your gift registry with. I may have traded Barbies for Burleigh pottery and lollies for Le Creuset, but at least this gift list doesn’t all fall on the shoulders of one jolly man and his sleigh.

Tucked away in a historic Chelsea building teeming with storied antiques, The Wedding Present Company is set over two floors of jaw-dropping interiors. Its layout is reminiscent of a real home, with designated living spaces, bedrooms, kitchens, and even an “al fresco” patch of grass so you can peruse everything in-situ. Impeccably styled with gift registry mainstays like The White Company and Jo Malone London, alongside independent brands like Rebecca Udall and Pooky (which has a full showroom downstairs), you needn’t rely too much on your imagination to see how things might look in your living space, as everything is perfectly in place.

What to expect during your visit to The Wedding Present Company

The Wedding Present Company’s showroom feels like stepping into a stylish—yet welcoming—abode. I was greeted by my lovely Wedding List Advisor Laura and poured a sparkling glass of Nyetimber, before settling into the comfy couch, sampling some fresh pastries, and going through the process of setting up our gift registry with Laura.

The Wedding Present Company are seasoned experts, with more than thirty years of experience helping couples find presents they will love and cherish forever. My fiancé is the keen chef in our household, so the checklist Laura shared helped me stay on track when it came to selecting cooking-related gifts. She gave me an iPad with a scanner to seamlessly populate the gift registry list with items from the showroom, and away I went.

My top registry picks and favourite brands

From the fluffy quilts to the endless selection of “good china” for those all-important occasions, it’s safe to say I got a little carried away (I blame the free-flowing Nyetimber) scanning to my heart’s content. Beautifully-laid dining tables were the perfect canvas for mixing and matching plates and napkins (my favourites were from Sophie Conran for Portmeirion), and I had so much fun opening every single drawer and exploring the cutlery options on offer from the likes of Robert Welch and Culinary Concepts.

Treasures to enjoy and cherish for decades to come

While our current flat only seats six for supper, Laura recommended enough china and crockery for at least twelve place settings to factor in potential larger dining and entertaining spaces in future — and the inevitable breakages from moving house (or having too much fun).

Then it was upstairs to the kitchen with its colourful wall of mugs, cabinets lined with cookbooks, and copper pans in every conceivable size dotted around an enormous standalone kitchen island that could make even the least capable of cooks feel like a bona fide Martha Stewart. With my scanner in hand, I couldn’t be stopped: Le Creuset casserole dishes in the neutral “meringue” colourway and their adorable set of colourful egg cups made it firmly onto the list, as did a stunning Sage coffee machine for my perpetually caffeinated husband-to-be. I’ve long loved LSA’s collection of sleek wine glasses for my rosé-sipping tendencies, so those—along with a rather fabulous cocktail shaker—also made the cut.

As we flowed into the sumptuously decorated bedroom, so too did the Nyetimber: I don’t think I ever saw the bottom of my glass! If you’re stumped for registry inspiration, I couldn’t recommend visiting The Wedding Present Company more — the sumptuous interiors and sophisticated selection will give you so much food for thought. For instance, I’m not sure I’ve ever considered a wall-mounted clock for any of our rooms, but after seeing such a fabulous selection artfully displayed above the bed, I have my eye on a black metal one from Newgate.

A luxury experience, whether you’re near or far

It’s worth noting that if you aren’t based in London or can’t make it to the Chelsea showroom, you can sit back, put your feet up, and browse the online showroom, boasting all the wares you can expect to see in the showroom space. Your dedicated Wedding List Advisor will be in touch to arrange a virtual appointment or a meeting by phone, and will still provide the delightful, white-glove experience that The Wedding Present Company is known and loved for.

That said, if you’re able to make a trip out of it, I honestly can’t imagine a more perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon of “fun wedmin” with my fiancé. Who says every day can’t feel like Christmas?! Now that I’ve got the lay of the land and a head start on our list, the only thing left to do is plot a return visit to The Wedding Present Company with him in tow!

Without giving away too many spoilers, I’ve long had a notion of what dress I would wear on my wedding day and, as such, it wasn’t something I rushed into when I got engaged. In fact, I was so convinced it would be ‘The One’ that I waited 9 months to book an appointment.

That said, I was as surprised as the rest that we chose a December date for our big day, a factor that momentarily made me reconsider my decision.

While I’ve stuck to my guns, as the big day looms, it’s possibly not surprising that I have found myself toying with the idea of an evening wedding dress for after dark. Specifically one that will sparkle on the dance floor!

Enter: Eliza Jane Howell, purveyors of show-stopping, hand-beaded designs in timeless, vintage silhouettes.

A Boutique Snapshot

As bridal boutiques go, the Eliza Jane Howell flagship on Connaught Street in London needs to be seen to be believed. Sequins, beads and feathers, it is a feast for the senses that will stop you in your tracks, in part due to the ever-changing, always eye-catching window display.

Not for wallflowers, it’s perfect for brides-to-be looking for an evening wedding dress that is equal measures timeless, glamorous and elegant.

From bespoke, made-to-measure gowns to ready-to-wear designs off the peg, Eliza Jane Howell has it all and offers a size-inclusive range from 8 to 26 so that there is truly something for every bride-to-be.

A Bespoke Experience

If one thing is for sure, at Eliza Jane Howell, you will always receive the warmest welcome from Andrea Cutts— the boutique’s co-founder— and her assistant stylist and muse, Chloe. The pair radiate warmth and a generosity of spirit that is simply unparalleled at other bridal boutiques in London.

No matter your shape nor size, rest assured that Andrea and Chloe will have you feeling like a goddess and can tailor every detail and design to your desire.

To the untrained eye, it might be difficult to identify your Carlotta from your Harriet on the boutique’s racks, but Cutts knows the inventory and, most importantly, what bespoke alterations can be made to the intricate designs, inside and out.

An appointment at Eliza Jane Howell is, pleasingly, free of charge and there is no limit on the number of designs you can try on (a blessing when faced with such a glittering array of designs to choose from).

My one piece of advice would be to have an idea of what you do (and don’t like) going into an Eliza Jane Howell appointment but also be willing to throw in a wildcard or two. The way in which the exquisite hand beading falls on your figure cannot be truly appreciated until it’s off the hanger and on your body.

The Try-On

Dress 1: Trudeau

I’d had my eye on Trudeau since I visited Eliza Jane Howell with my mum back in February. With a square neckline— a style that is a personal favourite of mine— the silhouette was simple but oh-so chic.

If Andrea and Chloe hadn’t pulled more options for me to try, I may well have been one and done.

Dress 2: Shelley

It’s hard to do justice to Shelley and its iridescent, platinum sequins.

While not obvious from first glance, the sweetheart neckline was wired, which not only provided support ,but ensured the dress sat flush to my chest— and, most importantly, meant I could dance all night long without fear of a nip slip. The low back oozed sex appeal, and I felt like a Hollywood bombshell.

While the dress was a touch big on my waist, Andrea assured me that the boutique’s seamstress would see to that, no problem at all.

Dress 3: Feathers

How could you possibly take an Eliza Jane Howell design to the next level? With feathers, of course.

With a plunging neckline, spaghetti straps and a feather trim, the Miss Kitty dress was the definition of a show stopper. While I loved so many individual elements of this evening wedding dress, it was a little out of my comfort zone and I felt more “me” in other designs.

Fortunately, that’s something Eliza Jane Howell has an abundance of, and so we moved swiftly on.

Dress 4: Gigi

Confession: on the hanger, the Gigi dress was the one I was least drawn to. On my body, however, I felt a million dollars. It fit like a glove, the almost-nude shade complimented my hair and the way the crystals and paillette sequins shimmered… oh, the way they shimmered!

The Gigi dress is actually a part of Eliza Jane Howell’s evening wear collection which, in my humble opinion, means you can wear the dress time and time again, even after your big day.

The Verdict

It would be a crying shame to reveal which dress I did choose but, for now, the boutique’s seamstress is tinkering away to ensure the made-to-order design fits my frame and height perfectly; a personal service that is afforded to all Eliza Jane Howell customers.

The Need-to-Know

Why Puerto Rico Is The Ultimate Destination For Foodies https://www.theweddingedition.co.uk/puerto-rico-the-ultimate-foodie-destination/ Mon, 24 Jun 2024 10:04:27 +0000 https://www.theweddingedition.co.uk/?p=22490 It’s no secret that all true foodies are now wending their way to the vibrant Caribbean archipelago of Puerto Rico, lured by the Island’s creative cuisine and inspired by its melting pot of cultures. The post Why Puerto Rico Is The Ultimate Destination For Foodies appeared first on The Wedding Edition.

]]>
It’s no secret that all true foodies are now wending their way to the vibrant Caribbean archipelago of Puerto Rico, lured by the Island’s creative cuisine and inspired by its melting pot of cultures. Travellers with a taste for culinary adventure arrive to find a literal paradise, both foodie (we’re talking seriously good street food and a burgeoning high-end restaurant scene), and in terms of the stunning scenery – think winding coastal roads and verdant hillsides dotted with organic farms.

Then there are the people. Welcoming, passionate and proud, Puerto Ricans are known as Boricuas in reference to the Island’s indigenous Taíno heritage. But it’s more than that, it’s a poetic spirit that illuminates and flavours every aspect of life here – including the cuisine. And the blend of Taíno, Spanish and African cultures infuses the food scene with a culinary flair unlike that of any other Caribbean island. From mofongo – the moreish national dish of mashed plantain, to farm-to-table feasts and fine dining – plus rivers of fragrant coffee and rich, spiced rum – you’ll discover a bounty of abundance on plentiful Puerto Rico.

Sizzling Street Food

The best street food adventures start with a coastal road trip from the neighbourhood of Piñones, in Puerto Rico’s northeast. Simply hop into a hire car at Loíza (preferably a convertible for uninterrupted coastal vistas) for a delightful 45-minute drive to Luquillo, a blissful beachside town that’s proudly home to 60 (yes, 60) restaurants and street-food chinchorros (kiosks).

It’s a treasure trove of every flavour, seasoning and traditional dish you could wish for. Feast on mouthwatering, crispy fritters – including alcapurrias, a national favourite stuffed with green banana and seasoned beef, and bacalaítos – a seafood-meets-pancake, salted-cod temptation. Next up are huge platters heaped high with Puerto Rican specialities such as fried plantains, spicy rice and tender pork – a heavenly incarnation of the Afro-Caribbean heritage that underlies the irresistibly tasty cuisine. And don’t miss pinchos – skewers of tender chicken thigh marinated in Caribbean spices and grilled to perfection.

Live Boricua

Farm-To-Table Fabulousness

With land this fertile and sunshine this frequent, it’s hardly surprising there’s an incredible farm-to-table scene in Puerto Rico. For those looking to experience this first-hand, El Pretexo (in Cayey’s scenic mountain community) is a must. The women-owned business has a verdant agroecological farming area, cosy chicken and duck coops (organic, naturally), and offers culinary pop-up experiences. However, the firm favourite with both Boricuas and travellers is the shared dinners, where guests break bread together and feast upon the home-grown fare while seated at a long, communal table with panoramic views of the Cordillera Central mountains.

Alternatively, the Frutos del Guacabo sustainable farm is roughly half an hour’s drive from San Juan, and its farm-to-fork experience involves a wander through lush crop pastures and feeding the goats, followed by a nibble on micro-greens and tangy goat’s cheese. It’s the perfect taster before you head on to more formal settings.

Coffee fiend? At Hacienda Muñoz you’ll see the very land the beans are grown on before tasting the rich, aromatic coffees they infuse. Spoiler alert: the coffee here has won the People’s Choice Award for best coffee in Puerto Rico three times. Founded in 1999, the coffee farm features a bijou restaurant, coffee shop and guided coffee tour – you can’t book, just turn up and pray that the coffee gods smile upon you.

Ridiculously Good Restaurants

The wealth of locally grown ingredients and a spread of organic wineries means Puerto Rican restaurants are popping up as easily as the (incredibly delicious) produce. Voted one of the 20 best New Restaurants in America by the James Beard Foundation in 2019, the farm-to-table restaurant Vianda is run by San Juan native and chef Francis Guzmán, and his wife Amelia. With dishes such as Salmon Silvestre in a red pepper-saffron sauce, accompanied by mofongo de plátano (that Boricua favourite) you’d be hard-pressed not to dine there.

Also near San Juan, is Oriundo. A concept of chef Martin Louzao, this culinary laboratory pays homage to Puerto Rico’s biodiversity by using forgotten ingredients (such as the ‘magpie shell’, or sea snail and hawthorn berry) in its mouth-watering menu. Monthly dinner seatings are announced on the restaurant’s Instagram— but be quick— they sell out in hours.

Next to Oriundo, you’ll find Cocina Abierta, another Martin Louzao destination. The constantly evolving menu respects traditional recipes, cherishes sustainability and is powered by a passion for food. Expect biodynamic and organic ingredients presented with flair.

1919 is another stop on any self-respecting foodie’s itinerary thanks to its Michelin-star-rated chef, Juan José Cuevas – and the elegant location – the oceanfront Condado Vanderbilt hotel. The hand-selected local produce and artisanal ingredients support local business while delighting diners with delectable concoctions such as melt-in-the-mouth ravioli stuffed with flavourful local chard and velvety suckling pig.

For an ultra-exclusive experience, visit the Epicuro Culinary Centre. You’ll take your place at one of just 12 seats that circle the open kitchen (sipping on a chilled glass of fizz), before heading on a soulful journey of Puerto-Rican food as a themed, five-course menu is expertly and passionately prepared in front of you by chef Antonio Pérez.

1919 Restaurant – Condado Vanderbilt

Rum Is The Only Drink Right Now

Welcome to the home of rum. Casa BACARDÍ opened in 1962 and was the first place the famed firm chose to produce rum outside of Cuba – no wonder this minimalist, white-washed building was christened ‘the Cathedral of Rum’ by Puerto Rico’s then-governor. Roll up today, and you can participate in a fascinating legacy tour and a guided rum tasting.

Meanwhile, perched on the grounds of an old sugar plantation, stands Hacienda Santa Ana – the HQ of local rum producer Ron del Barrilito (which translates to rum from the little barrel). The Bayamón regional company still uses the original blending and aging practices, as perfected in 1880, making this small-batch rum a favourite with the craft-cocktail movement, and tours of the old distillery end in the beautiful bar with a zingy cocktail.

Made in the town of Ponce, Don Q rum has been perfected by six generations of the Serrallés family and 150 years of craftsmanship to become the most popular rum in Puerto Rico. Here, alongside the fabulous Japanese garden and a butterfly sanctuary, you can visit the Serallés Castle Museum and learn all about the history of sugarcane and rum. As the piña colada was born in Puerto Rico, it’s a fitting end to your foodie expedition. Salud!
