Join The Wedding Edition as we explore the details of a beautiful rural wedding in Surrey, celebrating Olivia Gregorian-Wilson’s —one-third of the Gregorian Sisters—on her special day with her husband, Ollie.

The Story So Far

Oliver & I met in February 2015, at the Leicester Square Theatre in London. I had just graduated from 3 years of Musical Theatre training and was working at the theatre a few days a week, and Ollie had recently become tour manager for German comedian Henning Wehn who was about to do a 3 week residency at the theatre. A colleague pointed him out to me whilst he was on stage doing the sound check and he caught my eye! Later that  evening he came over to chat to me and eventually asked me for my number, we met for coffee the very next day and the rest is history!

After 7 and a half years together, Ollie finally popped the question on 28th July 2022 at Kilworth House in Leicestershire. My sister was in a show at the theatre there and we had travelled up to watch her perform. We had a beautiful pre-theatre meal in the orangery, then headed out for a walk before the show started. Looking back, I realise that Ollie’s behaviour was a little strange, but I now know that he was scoping out the perfect spot to stop and pop the question. He settled on Kilworth House’s garden temple, which was beautiful and private. It was a complete shock to me, I really had no idea! I had previously sent Ollie a few hints regarding engagement rings, mostly round diamond trilogy rings but as Ollie would say “he knows me better than I know myself” and he created a beautiful trilogy ring with emerald cut diamonds on a gold band, and for once he was right! He purchased the ring from the wonderful Dovi Fehler, known on Instagram as The London Jeweller.

The Venue

Our wedding was at the legendary Wentworth Golf Club in Virginia Water. We knew we didn’t want to be too far away from London where my family and many of our friends are based, and as Ollie is from Surrey we decided to keep our venue search in that area. Ollie’s brother had recently become a member of Wentworth and suggested we go and have a look after we’d had a couple of unsuccessful viewings elsewhere.

The first time we visited we knew it was the one – it was elegant and sophisticated but also laid-back which made us feel totally relaxed there. The views of the rolling fairways of the golf course and the castle-like clubhouse covered in ivy were stunning. There are a handful of hotel rooms in the clubhouse, so our families could stay, which included two amazing suites which myself and my bridal party used to get ready in on the morning of the wedding.

Wentworth offered us a choice of indoor and outdoor settings for the day which meant we didn’t have to worry about the weather! The majority of the day was spent inside the stylish clubhouse, specifically in the beautiful and grand ballroom which was the perfect location for our ceremony, wedding breakfast and the evening party. Our drinks reception took place on the Ryder Cup terrace, which overlooks a perfectly manicured garden and outdoor swimming pool. It really was the perfect venue for us and the team there were super helpful and truly created our dream day.

The day after the wedding we hosted a BBQ / pool party for our families and a few friends at Ollie’s brother’s house in Weybridge. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas so we didn’t get to use the pool, but we kept the party going inside with plenty of debriefing, Aperol Spritz and even some more dancing.

Olivia and Ollie

The Jewellery

Along with my engagement ring, I wore Megan Therese Couture earrings and a matching hair accessory which were very kindly gifted to me by my bridesmaids. The earrings and hair piece are like a work of art with hand crafted clay flowers and real pearls. They were the perfect finishing touch and really elevated my look.

The Bridal Party

My bridesmaids wore beautiful dusty blue halter neck floral dresses from Coast and my bridesmen wore dusty blue suits from Zara. They all looked absolutely gorgeous! I gifted them all a set of pyjamas from my favourite pyjama brand Chelsea Peers plus personalised clutch bags from Katie Loxton and earrings from Silver Rain for the girls and Charbonnel et Walker truffles & Paw Paw lip balm for the boys!

The Tablescape

I really wanted a soft, romantic colour palette for the decor so opted for pale blue, a peachy pink and white. Our flower arrangements were made by my talented auntie who works for Amanda’s Flowers in Richmond. Each table had a beautiful flower arrangement in keeping with the colour palette, pale blue napkins, tea lights in clear ribbed glass holders and pale blue, white and peach tapered candles which were inside glass hurricane holders. I purchased eucalyptus themed table numbers and name place cards from Papier to tie in with the flower arrangements.

Food & Drinks

All the food and drinks were organised in-house by Wentworth and it was truly delicious.

Beautiful canapes including Carlingford oysters which were a big hit with our guests! We served Pimms, fizz and beers for our drinks reception and Picpoul de Pinet and Rioja for the meal. The meal consisted of a Tandoori Tiger prawn salad or a Heritage Tomato and Peach salad starter, Fillet of beef or Truffle Roasted Cauliflower steak for main and a gorgeous Lemon meringue parfait dessert.

For our late night snack we served wood fired pizzas from Fire & Base, which were amazing along with our gorgeous three tier cake and macarons made by Lucy at Vanilla Frost Cakes who has made so many cakes for my family’s birthdays and important events.

Entertainment

As someone with a history of performing, and both of us being huge lovers of music, entertainment and music were a big priority for us. My wonderful choir, The Adam Street Singers, performed during the ceremony including as I walked down the aisle. This was so unbelievably special and was many of our guests’ highlight of the day and mine too! Another highlight was the surprise singing waiters, organised by my mum! One of the performers interrupted the dinner pretending to deliver a pizza, you can imagine the horror on my face but thankfully they burst into song shortly after and had everyone on their feet!

We found picking a first dance song quite hard and we still weren’t 100% decided until a few days before the wedding. In the end, we went for Rock with You by Michael Jackson (one of Ollie’s favourite artists). We didn’t want anything too slow or too fast so it was the perfect tempo for us to dance too. After the first dance myself, my sisters and a few of my dancer friends surprised Ollie and the guests with a flash mob to the song Be Faithful by Fat Man Scoop, it was absolutely electric and everyone loved it! It was a great way to get the party started.

For the evening we had the all female group High on Heels perform, which included a DJ, saxophone player, percussionist and lead singer. They were incredible and kept the energy up all night. I loved  the fact that you could tailor how many artists you wanted for your day and they totally catered to our music tastes.

Beauty Regime & Wellness

I found the search for make-up artists and hair stylists tricky, as there are just so many out there. I knew exactly how I wanted to look on the day, I wanted a glowy, soft glam look for the make-up and a sleek bun for my hair, so I searched through Instagram for MUA’s and stylists who had created similar looks, which is how I found my wonderful glam squad Ruby & Gaby. I had trials with both a couple of months before the wedding which I would highly recommend doing!

If I’m completely honest, I didn’t change up my usual regime for the wedding! I have always been quite lucky and never had many problems with my skin, so I decided not to mess with my usual skincare leading up to the wedding just in case something didn’t agree with me. I definitely tried to eat a little healthier and be more active but I didn’t put too much pressure on myself to lose weight.

Favourite Wedding Gifts

We used The Wedding Shop for our wedding gift list which was super easy to use! We did a mixture of gifts and experiences for people to purchase along with a honeymoon fund. A few of my favourite gifts would be a Gluggle Jug, Our Place cookware and a cookery course at Belmond Le Manoir in Oxfordshire.

The Honeymoon

A couple of days after the wedding we headed off on our honeymoon in Athens. We spent 2 nights in the city centre seeing the sights and exploring the city and then headed 30 mins away to Vouliagmeni, on the “Athens Riviera” where we enjoyed beach clubs, bars and restaurants for 4 nights. We are hoping to go somewhere further afield in 2025 but don’t have any plans just yet!

Advice

Don’t sweat the small stuff. So many of my married friends gave me this advice and it’s so true. In the lead up to the day. There may be some hiccups, things might not go exactly to plan, guests might drop out last minute, but usually there isn’t much you can do to change those things so try not to stress and focus on the positives.

Remember it’s your day and should be special and personal to you. Don’t compare your wedding to other weddings or worry about traditions, just do what is right for you and your partner and it will be the most perfect day.

The day goes so fast, really take time to be present and take it all in. We managed to have a couple of moments just the two of us and it was so lovely to just take a breather and process everything.

‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven; and heaven was copied after Mauritius’, according to Mark Twain, and we couldn’t agree more. For honeymooners, this magical Indian Ocean island is a divine destination year-round with its pleasant subtropical climate, lush landscape and elegant hotels – not to mention the 330 kilometres of sandy beaches that lace the island’s fringes.

And here’s another tip: if you’re after proper insider knowledge and expertise, family-owned and run Turquoise Holidays is the travel firm to turn to. They’ve created dreamy escapes for 10,000 honeymooners and each and every detail— from hotel ambience to spa and sports experiences, to sourcing a villa with an infinity pool and butler service— is taken care of, leaving you and your partner to lie back, relax and start your life as newlyweds in this island paradise.

The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius

After the whirlwind of wedding week, you can slip away to the sophisticated Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritus for real privacy amidst the 20-acre estate of lush gardens and bespoke architecture, and dive into phenomenal themed dining experiences. Think romantic fine-dining in the original 18th-century Gunpowder Room, all rustic walls and antique wine barrels, and on Saturday and Sunday, relaxed, communal al fresco cuisine in the fragrant herb garden— complete with underground fire pit.

Foodies can also get hands-on with complimentary Mauritian cooking classes. Home to just 71 villas and pavilions— go for one with a private pool for extra serenity— the eco-sensitive design here includes indigenous materials such as coconut wood and sugar cane thatch. Oh, and 600 metres of beachfront with mountain views comes as standard.

Exclusive Offer: 30% discount is valid for travel until 31 October 2025. Stay 7 nights at The Oberoi Mauritius in a Luxury Garden View Pavilion, bed & breakfast from £2,199 per person travelling in November. Includes return private transfers and international flights. *** Plus, honeymooners will receive a three-course candlelit dinner for two people along with a honeymoon turndown on the second night of their stay including one bottle of wine.

One&Only Le Saint Géran

Say bonsoir to One&Only Le Saint Géran, grande dame of Mauritius! All the sumptuous suites here spoil you with butler service, so you really don’t have to lift a finger (except to ponder which little luxury you’ll partake in next). And, each of the 143 rooms and suites is blessed with a private terrace or balcony facing the ocean, lagoon or white-sand beach for serene views. Getting-away-from-it-all couples can float in one of the two peaceful pools and drift to the swim up bar when refreshment calls. Meanwhile, active sorts can enjoy three floodlit tennis courts with a tennis Pro and 2 Padel courts— a first for Mauritius. We’re betting you start love-all and end up with a perfect match.

Exclusive Offer: Up to 40% discount and free half board is valid for travel between 11 May and 30 September 2025. Stay 7 nights in May in a Lagoon Room half board from £2,729 per person including flights and transfers. *Honeymooners will also receive a bottle of champagne upon arrival, a romantic memory book, a lush tropical flower bouquet, a scented candle, flavoured Rhum amenities and late check-out, subject to availability.

Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Mauritius

Barefoot beach lunch of fresh seafood and wood-fired pizzas, anyone? Simply hop into a boat that whisks you to Ilot Mangenie, the castaway retreat of Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Mauritius, and mosey along to this foodie treat. And there’s not just one, but two recreational islands, with the Ille aux Cerfs also on the itinerary.

Here, a private cabana and personal butler create the ideal setup for sipping on a chilled glass of rosé, perhaps after a game on the Bernhard Langer-designed 18-hole golf course or sampling water sports. For your base, we recommend a Junior or Ocean Suite on Frangipani Island. Soothing off-white walls, rich African woods and vibrant soft furnishings make a romantic haven at the end of your blissful beach day.

Exclusive Offer: 30% discount is valid for travel between 4 January to 26 December 2025. Stay 7 nights in June in a Coral Ocean View Room, with free half board from £2,449 per person. Includes return airport transfers and international flights. **Honeymooners will also receive a bottle of champagne on arrival, an exclusive private cabana experience for the day on the private island of Ilot Mangénie with a bottle of wine, an exotic fruit platter and a signature wood-fired black truffle pizza for lunch once during the stay, one special romantic turndown and a 60-minute couple’s massage at Chi The Spa.

Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort

Heritage Le Telfair is all about indulgence. You can visit a different restaurant every evening for dinner— 12 luxurious options offer different gourmet experiences — including Le Chateau de Bel Ombre: a farm-to-fork gastronomic wonder set in stunning colonial surrounds. Then there’s the beautiful lagoon, verdant tropical gardens and idyllic beach— each a piece of paradise, while a ylang-ylang massage at the Seven Colours Spa Millesime Collection is heaven-scented. In the airy suites, French windows and four-poster beds draped in translucent linens create an old-world serenity, ideal after a hedonistic party night at the famed C-Beach Club (a hotel stay gives you access). For grown-up vibes, plump for the new adults-only wing with its stunning pool. Our Turquoise-recommended experience here is the very local lychee wine – a must-try!

Exclusive Offer: 10% discount is valid for travel between 1 May to 31 October 2025. Stay 7 nights in June in a Deluxe Suite, bed & breakfast from £1,779 per person. Includes return private transfers and international flights. Plus, honeymooners will receive an exclusive signature cake, a bottle of bubbles, a romantic candlelit dinner or romantic beach breakfast once during the stay, and a beach bag for the bride and polo shirt for the groom.

Constance Prince Maurice

Nothing whispers ‘island escape’ so much as a stilts-over-water dwelling overlooking a natural fish reserve, which is why the Junior Suites and Villas at Constance Prince Maurice are eternally popular. You can continue your dreamy sojourn at Le Barachois, an overwater floating restaurant with five decks where you’ll partake in world-class cuisine— think heaped platters of fruits de mer and freshly grilled seafood. A private gourmet dinner at twilight on the gorgeous beach or in your serene suite is another tempting possibility. Set within 60 acres of tropical gardens on its own private peninsula, with a heated lap pool and spa, this hotel is an oasis away from everyday life. The only trouble is, you may never want to go home.

Exclusive Offer: Up to 35% discount is valid for travel between 7 January to 31 October 2025. Stay 7 nights in a Garde Junior Suite, bed & breakfast in June from £2,079 per person. Includes return transfers and international flights. *** Honeymooners staying between 1 May to 30 September 2025 will also receive a resort credit of £100 per suite/villa per night, to be used against food, drinks and spa treatments at the hotel. Plus, honeymoon couples will also receive a complimentary bottle of wine, a selection of canapés, a beach bag and a special candlelit dinner for two once during the stay.

Constance Belle Mare Plage

Lush tropical gardens in which to wander, 2 kilometres of private sandy beach to explore, four tennis courts, nine-hole mini golf, bicycle hire, and two incredible Constance Spas mean every blissful day is an adventure at Constance Belle Mare Plage. Sunkissed and relaxed, you’ll return to your chic room or suite— all wood and marble and set amid verdant surroundings— to dress for dinner and ponder your wine choice. For, alongside seven irresistible restaurants and six stylish bars, the unmissable wine cellar here has 30,000 bottles— and you can dine in the wine cellar restaurant, Blue Penny, surrounded by tens of thousands of wines from all over the world. This has to be the ultimate setting to toast to your new life together.

Exclusive Offer: 35% off is valid for travel between 1 May to 29 September 2025. Stay 7 nights in a Prestige Room, half board in June from £1,959 per person. Includes return private transfers and international flights. *** Plus, couples celebrating a honeymoon or landmark anniversary (fifth and every subsequent five years) will receive a bottle of sparkling wine and a special turn-down decoration on the day of arrival and a 25% discount each at Constance Spa for treatments taken between the hours of 09:30 and 14:00 once during the stay.

Sugar Beach, Mauritius

Sugar Beach, Mauritius is the essence of modern glamour, with a sprinkle of colonial-chic and heaps of luxury touches. A spa on the 1.5 kilometre white-sand beach and unique moments— such as making your own signature perfume— all add to the fun vibe. Plus, there are signature events like Strictly Sugar-Ballroom dancing lessons or Crazy Croquet, where you dress in white for a relaxed competition, fortified by a glass of rosé or Aperol spritz.

It’s sporty, too, thanks to the 18-hole course at Île aux Cerfs Golf Club, a tennis court, and water sports. With world-class seafood and sushi on the menu at the renowned Buddha-Bar Beach restaurant— and a location that gifts you one of the most glorious sunsets you’ll ever see— honeymoon life is certainly sweet at this contemporary hotel.

Exclusive Offer: Stay 7 nights and only pay for 5 nights when travelling between 6 January and 31 October 2025. Stay 7 nights in a Deluxe Sea View Room, half board in June from £1,939 per person. Includes return private transfers and international flights.

JW Marriott Mauritius Resort

The Pure Spa at the JW Marriott Mauritius Resort is the lure for those seeking ultimate relaxation, and as some of its sumptuous products are exclusive to the resort, you’ll feel even more pampered (the resort’s charming butler service also helps life here feel effortless). Classic, colonial charm reigns at the hotel, with its peaceful pool surrounded by tropical greenery and backdrop of the glittering Indian Ocean— where you can snorkel, kayak or join a dolphin cruise. When you want to step it up a gear, vibrant restaurants beckon and in the Le Morne Lounge bar, musicians play nightly— there are also music events on the beach, just pull up a beanbag and watch the sunset to a DJ or sax. Or simply snuggle up with your beloved at cinema under the stars.

Exclusive Offer: 5% discount and free half board is valid for travel between 11 May to 30 September 2025. Stay 7 nights in a Junior Suite, half board from £2,299 per person. Includes return private transfers and international flights. *** Plus, honeymooners will receive one bottle of sparkling wine and one fruit basket on arrival, and a 30% discount on Spa treatments.

LUX* Le Morne Resort, Mauritius

Golden hour at LUX* Le Morne Resort, Mauritius is really something with its chilled tunes extravaganza: Sax at Sunset. Or how about a sunset aperitivo on Le Morne Mountain? For something extra special, the 500-candle dinner on the beach has to be the ultimate romantic experience. Then go hunting for the ‘Secret Bar’, which has a new location each day, so you never know where you’ll end up sipping your G&T.

Unique treats like these abound here— pop into the old-fashioned telephone box for unlimited calls home, or take a seat at the outdoor Cinema Paradisco, popcorn and cocktail in hand. Days are spent drifting in one of the five pools and doing lazy laps to the swim up bar. All this with the striking backdrop of Le Morne Brabant Peak.

Exclusive Offer: 5% discount is valid for travel between 26 April 2025 and 5 January 2026 (blackout dates apply). Honeymooners also receive an extra 5% discount. Stay 7 nights in June in a Deluxe Room, bed & breakfast from £1,799 per person. Includes return transfers and international flights. Plus, honeymooners will receive one tropical breakfast by the pool, a plant-based cooking class using fresh local products, a cocktail-making class with the mixologist, and a Toast to Love with canapés and bubbles on your terrace once during the stay. If staying 4 nights or more, couples will receive a 3000MUR (approx £50) Spa Credit for each adult.

LUX* Belle Mare, Mauritius

Every single ultra-stylish suite and villa at LUX* Belle Mare, Mauritius has a private heated pool and faces the sparkling sea, so your honeymoon checklist is well on its way to being complete. Alongside spa indulgence at the LUX* Me Spa, and treats hidden in bottles on the beach or in secret gardens (like a diving lesson or candle-lit beach dinner) you’ll also find the brand’s first Beach Rouge restaurant/beach club.

Indulge in long, lazy lunches here by day, and magical dining by night as the sky lights up with a romantic red tint. And we know every night is date night on honeymoon, but for a true feast for the senses— in both décor and dining— head for Amari by Vineet, a contemporary Indian gem headed by Vineet Bhatia, the nation’s first Michelin-starred chef.

Exclusive Offer: Up to 25% discount is valid for travel between 26 April 2025 and 7 December 2025 (blackout dates apply). Honeymooners also receive an extra 5% discount. For brides, choosing a lipstick to tie your wedding make-up look together is one of the most exciting parts of the beauty planning. Will you choose a classic pink or brown nude to suit your skin tone, or make a statement with a vibrant red or vampy berry? Shade and pigment wise, there are so many options out there.

As with any make-up, it’s recommended to do a pre-wedding wear test so that you can see how it looks after one, two and even ten hours after first applying. You may love the look when it goes on, but not so much when it’s worn in. A top tip to make your lipstick last all day: line the lips with a lip liner in a similar, if not identical, shade to your lipstick. Powder over the liner with a translucent setting powder (Laura Mercier is a staple), before you apply your lipstick. If you’re going matte, you can even powder in between layers to ensure it stays put. On the quest for the best lipstick to wear on your wedding day, begin with these editor-approved formulas.

Best For: A Pinky Nude That Suits Everyone

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Lipstick, £28 charlottetilbury.com

A beloved pinky nude for all occasions, Charlotte Tilbury’s iconic Pillow Talk Lipstick is the perfect, creamy texture for brides to wear on their wedding day.  The best part is that no matter which shade of pink suits you best, Pillow Talk comes in a variety of hues: original, fair, medium and intense. The formula of Pillow Talk Original and Pillow Talk Medium is best described as a creamy matte, so while it won’t give you high shine, it gives a beautiful soft sheen and highly-pigmented finish. Pillow Talk Fair and Pillow Talk Intense come in Charlotte’s K.I.S.S.I.N.G formula, for more of a balmy, glossy finish. Head into a Charlotte Tilbury store or counter to be shade-matched for your perfect pout.

Best For: A Highly-Pigmented Lipstick

Tom Ford Lip Colour, £49 tomfordbeauty.co.uk

When asked to recommend a red lip, Tom Ford is always my first port of call for its staying power and pack-a-punch pigment. But the same rules apply for all 18 lip shades in the range. For brides opting for a bold red, Cherry Lush is the ultimate true-red (with blue undertones that suit neutral and pink undertones – which you are if the veins in your wrist are blue), and Wild Ginger is a great choice for olive and yellow undertones with its orange-red hue.

Best For: Nourishing And Hydrating

Victoria Beckham Posh Lipstick, £37 victoriabeckhambeauty.com

A balm-like texture in Victoria Beckham’s lipstick makes it a great choice for brides to wear on their wedding day – it’s comfortable, hydrating and lightweight, thanks to rosehip, coconut and avocado oils. Pair that with a rich pigment payoff and the result is a gorgeous satin-like sheen. Whether you go pink with Pout, vampy with Play or vibrant with Pop, Victoria Beckham’s lipstick is an ultra chic choice.

Best For: Maximum Shine

Hermès, Rouge Hermès Satin Lipstick, £62 www.hermes.com

This is one orange box you don’t need to score an appointment for. Rogue Hermès comprises 24 carefully curated lipsticks, in both matte and satin formulas. The satin formula is a sure-fire winner for soft, diffused colour that strikes the perfect balance between velvet softness and shine, and one that will work with any kind of make-up vibe. Orange Boîte is the brand’s signature colour, inspired by its iconic orange box, which would make for a fun, unusual twist on a classic bridal lip.

Best For: A Subtle, Glossy Look

Rhode Peptide Lip Tint, £18, www.rhodeskin.com

Hailey Beiber’s brand Rhode has taken the industry by storm since it launched in 2022 (and, according to one wedding make-up artist, Beiber’s make-up style is the most requested for brides on their wedding day). Its first lip product, the Peptide Lip Treatment was so popular when it launched, it built a total waitlist of 440,000. While Peptide Lip Treatments is a lip balm by nature, the pigmented Peptide Lip Tints make for a gorgeous soft, glowing lip look for a bride. Perfect for brides with more of a pared-back make-up look, or want to up the gloss-factor of your favourite lipstick.

Best For: A Lipstick That Lasts

Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink, £9.99, boots.com

If lipstick lasting all day and night is a top criteria, Maybelline’s Super Stay Matte Ink does what it says on the tin. A liquid lipstick in formula, it glides on with ultra-intense pigment, and is available in a huge variety of shades. The petal-shaped doe foot makes for easy application to define your Cupid’s bow, and even one coat will provide full-on colour and a matte finish, which promises 12-hour wear. This is a lipstick to lock in colour from ‘I do’ to dance floor.

Best For: A Lipstick Keepsake

Carolina Herrera Lipstick, from £27 For Lipstick Refill carolinaherrera.com

Carolina Herrera’s lipsticks and charms are such a fun way to accessorise your beauty stash, as well as being wedding-worthy formulas. They make great gifts for bridesmaids, too. Choose your satin or matte formula (the blur matte is my top tip for the best staying power, and can always be topped with a gloss for a boost of shine) and customisable cap and charms. How about yours and your new spouse’s initials?

Best For: A Bespoke Lipstick

Code8 Make Your Own Lipstick, £80 codeeight.com

Dreaming of a particular shade but can’t find The One? Code 8’s Lipstick Bar based in Burlington Arcade, Mayfair in London, allows brides to make a shade completely bespoke to them over a 45-minute session. It starts with picking the base undertone, mixing and testing, creating a mold and then voila! A lipstick shade completely unique to you. Could this lipstick be your Something New?

A romantic sunrise proposal on the Brooklyn Bridge, a family heirloom ring, and plans for a sun-soaked destination wedding – Bronte King and Matthew’s engagement journey is filled with beautiful heartwarming moments. The Wedding Edition takes an exclusive look at the Engagement Story with Bronte King and Matthew Dudley Scales….

By Bronte King

The story…

We met in 2020 through work, but it wasn’t until two years later, after I asked Matt for advice on videographers, that we reconnected over coffee. That coffee led to a date, and from that first moment, as cliché as it sounds, we both knew we’d found ‘the one’. We’ve now been together for two and a half years.

Dropping hints…

We talked about getting married quite early on. Oddly enough, I was never the type to dream about proposals or weddings, but after meeting Matt, I couldn’t wait to marry him. I teased him constantly, joking about when it would happen. He knew I loved opals – I admired his mum’s opal ring the first time we met and often sent him Instagram posts of similar rings as subtle hints.

The proposal…

We were in New York on a trip – a birthday present from Matt. I love planning our trips, and we even shared an itinerary on a notes app! I’d been adamant about catching the sunrise on the Brooklyn Bridge, as we’d be jetlagged and awake early. Around 5:15 a.m., we walked along the bridge, taking photos and enjoying the moment. As Matt set up his camera to record for my vlog, I had this fleeting thought: “Is he about to propose?” My heart was racing, but I tried to calm myself. Then, just like that, he proposed, and it was the most magical moment. We spent the rest of the day in a love bubble, exploring New York and calling our family and friends.

The ring…

The opal stone in the ring has been passed down through Matt’s family for generations, dating back to his great-great-grandmother. Matt had the stone removed from its original setting and placed into a new, sturdier one. He worked with a jeweller named Gemima to bring his vision to life. I was stunned when Matt revealed that the stone was the one I had admired on his mum’s ring – it was such a special moment, and I can’t stop staring at it.

Engagement party/celebrations…

As soon as we landed, my sister, brother, brother-in-law, and best friend had decorated our flat, and we had a celebratory breakfast together. That evening, my sister surprised me with a dinner with all my best friends, and we spent hours debriefing! We hosted our official engagement party in July, a few months after the proposal, to allow time to plan and gather everyone. We rented a gorgeous venue in Eccleston Yard, Victoria called Morena, and the warm summer evening made it the perfect celebration. I can’t recommend an engagement party enough!

The outfit…

I was wearing a full white outfit, which wasn’t out of the ordinary for me as I love white dresses and skirts. That day, I had a white skirt, white waistcoat, yellow bag, and blue-and-white Adidas Speziales – the ideal outfit for exploring New York. It turned out to be a perfect engagement outfit too! I did ask Matt that morning which of my two outfits to wear, and he chose the white one, but I didn’t think much of it at the time.Wedding plans so far…
We’re beyond excited for our wedding abroad in 2025! We both love to travel, and it felt right to celebrate our marriage by the sea, with all our loved ones together for a sun-filled holiday.

The Story

In May 2015, fate bought us together in a bar in Portsmouth, our hometown. We knew each other from college when we were 16 and 17 years old, so he was a familiar face that I was happy to bump into. We spent the whole night talking and laughing, and there was as instant spark. So much so that we went on our first date a couple days after. Fast forward to now, we have been together 9 incredible years and happily live in South East London with our sassy sausage dog, Margot. Life has been an adventure together ever since that night.

Dropping hints

Over the years we had talked a lot about getting married, and it was something we both wanted. Tom told my parents he was proposing whilst the four of us were on holiday together. He managed to sneak the conversation in whilst I wasn’t there, which I am so pleased he did. However, a few weeks afterwards, a less sneaky parcel arrived at the door one morning. When I went to answer the doorbell, I was ushered away soon after. Whilst I felt it would be happening soon, I definitely pretended to not notice the suspicious package and go along with the surprise.

The Proposal

Without ever discussing it, my heart had always been set on getting engaged in Greenwich Park. It’s our favourite place, filled with countless memories from the past few years of living locally. Fortunately, Tom had the same idea too.

During our morning walk, Tom knelt down at the Greenwich Park viewpoint and asked me to marry him. With a breathtaking view of the London skyline, surrounded by the parkland and our beloved sausage dog, it was an incredible moment. I wish I could relive it, as it now feels like a joyful blur.

Tom had planned a day full of things I love: Greenwich Market food stalls, enjoying a spa afternoon, sipping rooftop drinks, and dining at my favourite Japanese restaurant.

The Ring

Pinterest can be a minefield, and I would often show Tom different designs to give him an idea of my tastes. One day we came across a beautiful yellow sapphire – I loved the way it glistened and how rare it was.

Tom loved it too, and being a bigger risk-taker than I am, he made his decision. He collaborated with the brilliant team at Fenton to design the bespoke ring, but incorporating unique touches.

The ring features an emerald-cut yellow sapphire set horizontally, surrounded by small diamonds. Engraved on a delicate gold band marks ‘Always G&T’ inside. What’s more, we discovered the gem stone originally comes from Sri Lanka, which happens to be one of my favourite countries and a place I love.

I might be biased, but I believe my ring is the most beautiful thing, and Tom did such a brilliant job. I couldn’t be happier.

The Celebrations

A couple of weeks after getting engaged in Greenwich Park, we celebrated with a weekend at Soho Farmhouse in the Cotswolds. We spent our time by the lit fire, sipping champagne sent by family and friends, relaxing in a steaming outdoor bath and heated pool despite the cold weather, watching films in a velvet-seated theatre, and indulging in delicious food.

A couple of months later, we hosted an engagement party with family and friends. It was held at a speakeasy styled bar close to the place we originally met all those years ago. We had personalised cookies created, a fun couple quiz, a photo booth, and a sax player who kept the party lively all night. It is safe to say I drank a bit too much and learned my lesson for over-indulging on the big day.

Wedding Plans So Far…

We’re over the moon to have set the date for next winter, on our tenth anniversary together. Tom loves the winter, whilst I love the party season and build up to Christmas. Even better, it falls on a special date for us. We’ll be getting married at a manor house in Hampshire, which features a beautiful orangery, gardens, and on-site cottages for guests to stay at.

We hope for it to be romantic, cosy, colourful and more importantly, fun. Spending the day with our loved ones, and having a big, vibrant party is what we are prioritising.

We’re also planning an elongated honeymoon travelling around South America afterwards. Whilst there are still so many details to plan, I can’t wait for this next chapter together.

Even after a decade as a Jewellery Editor, there are still some diamonds that stop me in my tracks. Like the eight-carat old European cut solitaire that I tried on at Hancocks London: a megastar of a stone, fully deserving of the tiny rotating plinth on which it’s displayed. And it’s not the only diamond to cause a sharp intake of breath.

Burlington Gallery High Res

The Burlington Gallery on the second floor of Hancocks’ newly renovated St James’s showroom showcases dozens of incredible diamonds, from classical solitaires to unusual cuts and colours. With its pink Setting Plaster walls, Murano glass chandeliers and a Bollinger champagne bar secreted inside a cupboard, it’s a romantic haven for the newly or almost-engaged. With such a dazzling range of rings to try on, you’ll want to linger for hours.

A four-carat Art Deco emerald-cut diamond, a two-carat Golconda diamond, elegant oval diamonds in flower-inspired designs, plus Colombian emeralds, Burmese rubies, sapphires in stunning shades of pink and blue… it’s a magpie’s dream, and every ring is one-of-a-kind. That’s because the vast majority of Hancocks’ diamonds and gemstones are antique: many are sourced from historic jewellery, and given a new lease of life in handcrafted rings inspired by the era in which the stone was originally cut.

“When these diamonds were originally cut, they did not have the commercial pressures of today; the goal was to create the most beautiful, polished gem possible, maintaining weight while making something with character, beauty, life and charm,” says Guy Burton, Managing Director of Hancocks London, which was founded in Mayfair in 1849. “Our old-cut diamonds are all individuals and still show the hand and skill of the cutter. Each one is truly unique in character.”

This celebration of history is what makes Hancocks unique. One of London’s oldest and most prestigious jewellers, it has received four royal warrants over its 175-year history – the first from Queen Victoria in 1849. Visitors to the new showroom can flick through a company diary started by its founder, Charles Hancock, in 1866. The diary documents the house’s numerous royal, aristocratic and celebrity clients, while the contents of the display cabinets reflect centuries of exceptional craftsmanship.

Previously located in a shop in Burlington Arcade, Hancocks’ new home displays an astonishing amount of antique, vintage and newly crafted jewellery over three sumptuous showrooms. On the ground floor, vintage Cartier, Bulgari and Van Cleef & Arpels appear alongside centuries-old tiaras. I popped a late-Victorian pearl and diamond tiara on my head and instantly felt like a Disney Princess. It’s the perfect finishing touch to a dreamy bridal look. Upstairs, in the Bruton Gallery, I strung a 1930s rivière necklace around my neck: set with over 40 carats of old-cut diamonds, it would be show-stopping for a black-tie wedding, and still looks modern enough to wear with jeans or tailoring.

There’s a gorgeous array of wedding-day jewellery scattered throughout the three floors: from natural pearl earrings and necklaces to antique diamond bracelets, diamond chandeliers and, my favourite, a cabinet full of bold, textured gold jewellery that would look sensational with a minimal silk gown.

Vintage jewellery connoisseurs will get excited about collectible jewellery by the likes of Georges Lenfant, Rene Boivin and Aldo Cipullo. And those whose love affair with vintage is just beginning can be reassured that the collection has been curated by Hancocks’ experts, with a focus on distinctive design and exceptional hand-craftsmanship.

“We pride ourselves on our curation of jewellery, that displays the finest skills and expertise of designers and master craftsmen,” says Guy, who selects every antique diamond and gemstone himself, and leads the development of bespoke creations. As a family-run house, this personal touch is what keeps clients coming back, knowing that every time they walk through Hancocks’ doors, there will be a new selection of one-of-a-kind treasure to explore.

From crossing paths 14 years ago, to a dream destination wedding in Portugal, Kate and Chris share the details that made their wedding day so special.

The Story So Far

We first met fourteen years ago in Chelford, Cheshire, and kept crossing paths. Kate used to be a model, and we’d often bump into each other on nights out in Manchester. It always seemed like one of us was with someone else, so I honestly didn’t think Kate would be interested in me. Kate used to work in a restaurant, and I promoted the nightclub underneath, so I would see her coming in often.

Our relationship started purely as a friendship until one night in Manchester, I saw Kate on a date. When her date slipped off to the toilet, I went over and asked if she was on a date and suggested we go on one instead. That’s how it all began. We started seeing each other in November 2019, but then the lockdown hit, and we couldn’t see each other for a while. Eventually, Kate moved in with me and my Dad. Both of us were furloughed, which turned out to be amazing and really accelerated our relationship.

I had been thinking about getting engaged, and after my Dad passed away, I wanted to do it even more. To find the perfect ring, I asked Kate’s maid of honour what design she thought I should go for. She sent me a design from an Australian designer, Michael Arthur – a pear-shaped platinum ring with a secret halo under the diamond. It was a high import, so I took the design to Hatton Garden, to Beverley Hills Jewellers, and worked with a girl named Kate, it was like it was meant to be! We made a few adjustments to make the diamond sit more flush.

The engagement was probably the worst kept secret because I was so excited. I wanted to propose somewhere really romantic, not cliché like in a restaurant. I settled on Santorini and got in touch with a wedding planner there. I rented a chapel, arranged for a private chef, and booked a private transfer. The day didn’t go entirely as planned – we were running late, and Kate was stressed because they had put oil in her hair during a massage.

When we got picked up from the hotel, there were two guys in the taxi, and I told Kate they were doing a photoshoot of us around Santorini. Kate wasn’t impressed when we got to a photo spot overlooking the blue domes. As we drove to the venue, I made her close her eyes. We pulled up, and I had the ring hidden in the glovebox. Guiding her down the stairs, “Amazing” by George Michael, her favourite song, was playing. Kate started crying. There was a path of candles and rose petals, and a table set for two with all her favourite dishes for a four-course meal. We watched the sunset, had a dance, and they set off fireworks. When we got back to the hotel they decorated our room with candles and rose petals, making the evening even more special.

The Venue

We always envisioned a destination wedding. We wanted to go away with all of our friends and family and loved the idea of guaranteed good weather. Initially, we looked at venues in Santorini but couldn’t find one that matched our vision. Nothing felt like “us.” So, we expanded our search to Lake Como, the South of France, and Mallorca. We were set on Mallorca for quite a while, but eventually, we started looking back in the UK, hoping to involve our dogs, but nothing felt quite right.

We sent countless enquiries to venues abroad, but most didn’t fit our budget or vision. Many places only covered the cost of the building, requiring everything else to be arranged from scratch. It was frustrating. Then, we stumbled upon Solar da Levada and instantly knew it was perfect. When Kate found their page on Instagram, the pictures were unreal, better than anything we had imagined. Kate set up a meeting with Natalie from Veil and Véu, and we had a call. Natalie and Tania had both got married in Veil and Véu venues and hearing their stories made us trust them immediately. We started the call at 7pm and by 8pm, we knew we wanted to book. It felt like we had known Natalie for years; she felt like a friend.

The venue was everything we dreamed of and more—classic, classy, with a touch of drama. It featured 400 meters of fountains, glass rooms, water running down the ceiling, and natural daylight in the ceremony room. The interior was minimalistic, monochrome, a mix of rustic and modern, with old-school glamour that was cool and timeless. The old chapel was stunning. Our guests experienced different parts of the venue throughout the day: the ceremony, the courtyard for food and drinks, the surprise dining room, and the party on the lake. We even arranged platforms on the water with a DJ in the middle, so we could party on the lake at sunset. A saxophonist added to the magic. The cake cutting with a fire curtain was spectacular. We moved inside for the first dance and then continued the party.

The wedding was all about utilising the space at the venue. From day one of planning, we envisioned a pre-celebration with all our friends and family under fairy lights at sunset. It was a chance for everyone to get to know each other and break the ice. The vision came to life when we booked a hotel exclusively for three days without even seeing it—we fell in love with the pictures. The night before the wedding, we had dinner in a vineyard with a table for 100 people set under fairy lights, enjoying a three-course meal with all our guests. Everyone was amazed by how beautiful it was.

The day after the wedding, we had a relaxed BBQ and pool party with DJs from the wedding, continuing into the sunset. Originally, we planned for everyone to dress up, but everyone was hungover and preferred to stay around the pool area. We adapted, making it a more relaxed day. All three days were amazing in different ways. We were on cloud nine, with the perfect vibe and a rave in the vineyard until the music stopped. The sunset, house music, and the entire experience were even better than we could have ever imagined.

The Fashion

My first dress was a Ricca Sposa dress from Victoria Lou Bridal in Northampton. It was a a fitted strapless dress with a structured cupped corset, flower lace and matching long sleeves. The bodice had a low back with exposed boning, the skirt was full and had a long train.

I had a second dress by Rosie Etienne, a mini lace corset dress with a voluminous skirt bottom, 3D hand-placed appliqué flowers and embellished beading.

My shoes, from Lipsy, weren’t the top priority but complemented the outfit well.

For our “something blue,” one of Chris’s groomsmen’s parents gifted me a beautiful blue evil eye pin to attach to my bouquet and a Hamsa hand for good luck, making it even more special and meaningful.

The Jewellery

Chris gifted me a Christian Dior necklace, and my bridesmaids gave me beautiful matching earrings.

The Bridal Party

Our bridesmaids’ dresses were Pretty Lavish – one-shouldered satin gowns in a stunning bronze colour. All the bridesmaids are tall, and this brand makes long dresses that can be easily altered. From the beginning, I knew these dresses were perfect. They fit so well and were amazing quality.

As for the groomsmen, they all got their own suits and matched with blue Misses Bow Ties. For their gifts, we gave each of them a personalised cigar holder with a cigar cutter and a cigar. The bridesmaids were given necklaces with their star signs on.

Transportation

For our wedding car, we chose a convertible Rolls Royce Corniche with luxurious red leather seats and a sleek silver exterior.

The Tablescape

From day one we knew we wanted our tablescapes to be classic white roses with babies breath and ivory candles.

Food & Drinks

We had personalised cocktails for the guests, Kate’s was a spicy margarita and Chris’ was ‘Slightly Older Fashioned’.

Entertainment

We wanted music to play a huge part in our wedding day. We had a violinist for the ceremony, and I walked down the aisle to “I’m Kissing You.” For our first dance, we chose “My Destiny” by Lionel Ritchie. During sunset hour, we had DJs and a saxophonist to set the perfect mood. The vibe was like an Ibiza party with electronic house music that was groovy and cool, featuring different versions of old-school classics with a modern twist.

Beauty Regime & Wellness

We brought my amazing hair dresser and MUA from Cheshire, and they created exactly what I wanted.

Favourite Wedding Gifts

We didn’t have a traditional gift list because we knew our guests were already spending a lot to come to the wedding. Instead, we included a honeymoon pot on our wedding registry. One of our favourite gifts was a Fortnum and Mason hamper full of wine. However, Kate’s absolute favourite gift was the necklace from Chris.

The Honeymoon

Our honeymoon plans are still to be confirmed, but we’re definitely thinking of a hot, relaxing beach holiday. We’re considering destinations like Bali, the Caribbean, or the Maldives. Right after the wedding, we had a mini-moon in Portugal, which was so relaxing.

Advice

Find a great wedding planner: We loved the venues, obviously that was the main thing, but if you’re planning a destination wedding, hiring a wedding planner like Veil and Véu is a must. When we met Natalie and Tania, we clicked and got on straight away, it felt like we’d known them for years! They’ve both been through the same wedding process in Portugal, which filled us with confidence we could have the most amazing three days. No ask was too much, they made everything we requested happen. We loved the whole process and want to do it all again.

Trust your gut: Follow your instincts throughout the planning process. If something doesn’t feel right, take your time and don’t settle. It’s important to be confident and happy with every decision you make, so don’t rush into anything if you’re unsure.

Don’t be afraid to take the plunge: Be bold and go for what you really want. We loved every aspect of our wedding because we had the courage to ask for exactly what we visioned. Embrace the process and make the most of every moment—you won’t regret it!

We have entered an exciting new era of weddings and lots of couples are opting for a narrowed down guest list and seeking small wedding venues in London. A reduced guest list has many pros. Firstly, it becomes all about the food. Wave goodbye to the three-course classic and upgrade to a Michelin-starred feast with wine pairing. You can go big on the little details; the floristry, tablescape and favours all warrant more thought. On the day, the intimate number means you don’t have to “do the rounds” rushing between friends and family, you can fully relax and engage in proper conversations with everyone there. And your guests will mingle more too.

We’ve also noticed a shorter lead time on weddings – it’s no longer the classic 18-month countdown but often six weeks – and having a smaller number makes this totally achievable. The idea of a big party is definitely not for everyone and can feel overwhelming. Then let’s not forget the couples who are planning big destination weddings but need to officially tie the knot first, and want to do it in style.

Whatever your reasoning, there are so many beautiful venues in the capital, whether you’re looking to host an old-school sit-down wedding banquet for your nearest and dearest, a fabulously raucous drinks reception or party in a penthouse – we have got you covered.

Its buildable coverage and long-lasting formula ensure a picture-perfect finish, ideal for capturing radiant beauty on your wedding day. This innovative cushion foundation seamlessly enhances your natural allure, making it a firm favourite among editors for its effortless elegance and timeless appeal.

SHADE AND ILLUMINATE SOFT RADIANCE FOUNDATION SPF 50, £112

This silky-smooth Tom Ford hero product is regularly spotted inside London’s top make-up artist’s kits for a weightless yet tenacious formula that leaves behind an enviable glow that never clings to dry areas and leaves your complexion looking plump and smooth. Also known for impressive coverage that looks great in pictures, it has a very inclusive shade range.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup, £35, harrods.com

An icon, and an icon for a reason, Esteé Lauder’s high coverage foundation launched in 1997 but it remains a favourite of wedding make-up artists, brides and mothers of the bride alike. It’s so good that it’s surprising it doesn’t come with a guarantee – this is one formula that looks just as good straight after application as it does after ten hours (dance floor included). Not sure which is your perfect shade? Head to counter where clever technology can shade match you on the spot.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation, £29, maccosmetics.co.uk

MAC’s studio range is formulated for being in front of the camera, whether that be under hot lights in a photography studio or out on location on a film set, and seeing as you’re going to be spending the entirety of your day getting snapped, it’s no wonder MAC’s high-coverage formula is a great choice for brides. It has a natural matte finish, so if it’s glow you’re after, you can amp up the ‘lit-from-within’ look with a liquid blush and/or highlighter on top.

Pixi H2O Skin Tint, £24, pixibeauty.co.uk

Smooth, fresh-faced, like you but just that little bit brighter – say hello to Pixi’s skin tint. The water-based gel tint formula is much lighter than a traditional foundation, and makes your skin feel cool and refreshed (beach brides – this is your ‘One’!). Plus, it’s water resistant, so won’t run if you happen to shed a tear or two

Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, £44.50, feelunique.com

This multi-award-winning foundation is famed for its instant glow-factor, but it’s also a great choice for those looking for light coverage. It’s a cult celebrity favourite, including Kim Kardashian West’s who loves it for nailing her signature ‘soft glow’ look. For sheer coverage, swirl it on to skin with a stippling brush and build up in the areas that you’d like it.

Charlotte Tilbury Charlotte’s Beautiful Skin Foundation £34, charlottetilbury.com

A recent addition to the foundation market, and one that’s already making waves for its medium, buildable coverage and all-over glow. If you’re conscious about using kind-to-skin make-up, this is a brilliant choice. Charlotte’s formula contains hyaluronic acid to hydrate, coconut extract to help your skin keep hydrated throughout the day, and a brightening rose complex that targets dullness and dryness. Glow, guaranteed.

Clé de Peau Beauté Radiant Cream Foundation, £108, harrods.com

While this may not be an option for brides on a budget, the quality of Clé de Peau Beaute’s foundation range is exceptional. It has a knack of offering good coverage while making skin still look like skin. It’ll conceal any unwanted redness but let freckles shine through and is a brilliant choice for brides getting married abroad, as it works seamlessly with your skin, whatever the climate.

Laura Mercier Silk Crème Oil-Free Foundation, £38, cultbeauty.co.uk

‘Oil-free’, unsurprisingly, is one of the key terms to look out for when you’re after a foundation that won’t leave you with a second skin sheen after three hours. This is an oil-free version of Laura Mercier’s bestselling foundation, and a winning choice for brides with oily skin. It’s high coverage but feels wonderfully lightweight, so you can apply once and then forget about it – just the ticket for a busy Big Day.

Bare Minerals Matte Mineral Loose Powder Foundation

Bare Minerals’ original icon, its loose powder foundation is a brilliant option for those with oily skin. It’s both non-comodogenic and non-acnegenic, meaning that it won’t clog pores to cause breakouts or blemishes (in fact, the brand claims the formula is so clean you could even sleep in it – though we wouldn’t recommend). Buff on with the complementary brush and build from light to full as required.

Bare Minerals Matte Mineral Loose Powder Foundation, bareminerals.co.uk

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Hydrating Longwear Foundation

Hydrating and longwear are two buzzwords you want to see if you’re a bride with skin on the dry side. Fenty Beauty’s ultra-smooth formula glides on effortlessly – just one pump goes a long way. What’s more, it’s sweat and humidity-proof (tick, tick) and with its 50 shades, you’re sure to find one you can’t wait to wear down the aisle.

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Hydrating Longwear Foundation, £30, boots.com

Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation

Bridal expert Bobbi Brown has a solution for dry skin woes with its innovative serum foundation. With lychee, bamboo grass and cordyceps mushrooms which reduce inflammation and gives skin a glowing boost. Just be sure to dust a layer of loose powder across the t-zone and you’ll be good to go all day.

Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation SPF 40, £51, bobbibrown.co.uk
